Charlottetown – Hockey PEI Minor Council recently concluded their annual Minor Hockey Presidents Workshop in Charlottetown. This workshop is an opportunity to bring together representatives (presidents and executive members) from the 20 Minor Hockey Associations, Hockey PEI Minor Council, Board of Directors and staff, to share information and forge common ground on issues related to the game of hockey in the province.
The workshop discussed information in such areas as: registration, provincial championships, development initiatives, policy decisions and regulations regarding minor hockey. The following is a summary of the workshop.
Recreational Hockey
The biggest change with the hockey landscape this coming season is the introduction of a new “Recreational” male category for the Pee Wee to Midget divisions. Associations will be restricted to having one “A” (checking) team. Other teams will be classified as “Recreational” (non-checking). Minor council and the associations covered a variety of areas related to these changes and formulated some action items as a means to prepare for the upcoming season.
“We are confident that this change will be a positive step for minor hockey in the province,” stated Hockey PEI Minor Council Chair Barry Thompson. “As with any change, we anticipate some challenges in the initial stages, but with the assistance and cooperation of our minor hockey associations we expect the resulting transition will be smooth”.
Coaching Certification
Delegates were updated on recent changes to the coaching certification program approved by Hockey PEI. The updated change is in regards to “AA” teams (male and female). Beginning this season, the Head Coach must obtain Development 1 certification. Further to that, beginning in the 2011-2012 season, all coaches at the “AA” level must have must have Development 1 certification. As in previous seasons, it is mandatory that all team officials have Speak Out or Respect in Sport certification. The deadline to obtain certifications is December 31st.
Provincial Championships
Minor council and the associations determined the dates for this season provincial championships.

Presentations
In addition to regular business, delegates were treated to a presentation by Corey McNabb, Senior Manager Player Development Hockey Canada. Mr McNabb shared his knowledge and vision regarding the game by presenting the Hockey Canada Long Term Athlete Development Plan. McNabb directed his presentation on the importance and delivery of the Hockey Canada Initiation Program and how focused development of our youngest players only helps to strengthen our programs in the long term. McNabb was in Charlottetown to deliver a development seminar to provincial minor hockey coaches. The coach seminar ran the duration of two days and encompassed off and on ice sessions. These coaches are now qualified to provide specialty clinics in their home associations.
