BRANDON GORMLEY NAMED CAPTAIN OF TEAM ATLANTIC 2009

Amherst, NS - The coaching and management staff of Team Atlantic 2009, in conjunction with Hockey Canada’s Atlantic Regional Centre, announced today that Brandon Gormley has been named Captain of Team Atlantic’s entry at the upcoming World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in Port Alberni, British Columbia.

“Brandon Gormley is a leader on and off the ice and we are very pleased to be naming him as Captain of our team today,” stated Jason Tatarnic, Head Coach for Team Atlantic. “The staff was impressed with Brandon at our summer evaluation camp and we have continued to follow his progress during the first half of the season and the staff likes what they see from him as a young player in the QMJHL. His experience with last year’s team will also be a huge asset to our squad.”

Gormley, from Murray River, Prince Edward Island, is a member of the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Gormley was a member of the Team Atlantic 2008 and also represented his home province at the 2007 Canada Winter Games as a member of Team Prince Edward Island.

The coaching and management staff also announced that Sean Couturier, Ben Duffy, and Morgan Ellis have been named Assistant Captains for Team Atlantic 2009.

“I am very pleased with the make-up of our leadership group,” added Tatarnic. “Each of these players possess a lot of skill, work ethic, character, and the drive to compete. All have experience at a high level of competition as all played with Team Atlantic at the 2008 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in London, Ontario. We are fortunate to have quality young men like these in our program.”

Sean Couturier from Bathurst, New Brunswick is a member of the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Ben Duffy from Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia is a member of the PEI Rocket of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Morgan Ellis from Ellerslie, Prince Edward Island is a member of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Team Atlantic will travel to Port Alberni on December 26th. After practicing on December 27th and playing an exhibition game against Slovakia on December 28th, Team Atlantic will play their first tournament game against Team Ontario on December 29th. Team Atlantic will also face off against Russia, Germany, and Team Pacific in the round robin portion of the event.

Team Atlantic is currently in Amherst, Nova Scotia for a pre-competition camp. The team practiced twice on Sunday and welcomed approximately 30 minor hockey players onto the ice for a 45 minute skate with the members of Team Atlantic. On Monday, the team will hit the ice for two more practice sessions and will also partake in some team building activities before returning to their hometowns to enjoy a couple of days with family prior to their departure on Boxing Day for the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.

This year's edition of the team will be looking to build upon the great things which have been done during the 23 year history of Team Atlantic and continue the tradition of representing Atlantic Canada in a first class fashion on and off the ice.

The Under 17 program is a cornerstone for Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. It is the first time that players in our country get to put on the Canadian jersey and compete against international teams. The invaluable experience gained by these young men will help them as many will go on to represent Canada at the Under-18s, World Juniors and other international events.
