HOCKEY ASSOCIATIONS INVITE FEMALES TO ESSO FUN DAY CLINICS

Charlottetown - Minor Hockey Associations along with Hockey PEI and sponsor ESSO Canada Ltd. will be hosting a number of ice times across Prince Edward Island to encourage females of all ages to try the game of Hockey.

Hockey PEI is comprised of six female zones throughout the province. These designated zones will be hosting various Esso Fun Day clinics throughout September to encourage young female players to come and try the game of hockey. The Esso Fun Day program introduces the basic skills of the game in a positive non-threatening fun environment for first time participants.

Esso Fun Day clinics allow young players the opportunity to skate with some experienced girls and also gain some valuable skills of the game from coaches who have been involved in hockey at the local level. Minor Hockey Associations will have members of their Board present at the clinics to answer any questions and some equipment will be available.

“Female hockey has seen growth across the country over the years. However, we must continue to recruit new players to the game and we believe that offering a grass roots program like Esso Fun Days is a positive step”, stated Kerri Carpenter representing Hockey PEI Minor Council. “The concept of Esso Fun Days is a great program that we can offer to females of all ages”.

Success in the female game has been evident at the national level and international level with the success of the Hockey Canada national team program and such elite programs as the Canada Games in which PEI saw its best finish in female hockey at the 2011 games in Halifax. Locally, the Sweetheart Tournament sponsored by the North River Minor Hockey Association which is for female teams only, has become prominent tournament on the Atlantic hockey circuit.

Hockey PEI encourages and invites all females that want to try the game for the first time or even potential returning players to come and join us at one of the many clinics being offered by the zone representatives.

All clinics are free of charge and if required organizers can assist with the necessary equipment. Equipment required for the clinics is hockey skates, gloves, CSA approved helmet and face mask, CSA neck guard, shin guards, elbow pads and stick.
