Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, June 3, 2010 – Hockey PEI and the City of Charlottetown have been awarded the hosting rights for the 2012 Esso Cup. Hockey Canada made the announcement during its Annual General Meeting, which took place in at the end of May in Montreal, Quebec.
“Hockey PEI, in partnership with the City of Charlottetown, is pleased to have been awarded the right 2012 Esso Cup,” stated Gordie Whitlock, President of Hockey PEI. “We are excited to work with the volunteer organizing committee to plan a first-class national event and for the opportunity to showcase the best midget female teams in the country as they battle for the national championship.”
Taking place April 15 – 21, 2012 at the CARI Complex – MacLauchlan Arena, the Esso Cup is the Canada’s National Female Midget Hockey Championship. The event will feature 6 teams – one host team and five regional champions (Pacific, West, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic) – all vying for the national title. The Capital District Cyclones are the host team for the event.
The Esso Cup follows a single round-robin format, followed by a semi-final round, bronze and gold medal games. The championship gold medal game will be nationally televised live on TSN.
Formerly known as the Esso Women’s Nationals, Charlottetown hosted the event in 2008 when it was a senior women’s national hockey championship. Hockey Canada reformatted the event in 2009 to become a national midget female championship and rebranded it “The Esso Cup”. The 2012 event will mark the first time that Charlottetown will host the Esso Cup in its new format.
“The Esso Cup will have a tremendous impact on our community as we host the best midget female hockey players in Canada and showcase all that our community has to offer to the nation,” said Mayor Clifford Lee. “We have been fortunate to develop a strong relationship with Hockey Canada and to have hosted many of their regional, national and international championships over recent years. We look forward to working with them again, in conjunction with Hockey PEI and the volunteer organizing committee, to host the 2012 event.”
SCORE, Charlottetown’s sport tourism initiative and partnership between the City of Charlottetown and Tourism Charlottetown, developed a solid bid which beat out three other communities for the right to host the 2012 event.
The tournament host committee has worked extremely hard in preparing the bid through the initial phases and is now ready to go to work. “I am very excited to lead a group of dedicated female hockey supporters to showcase the caliber of hockey talent we have established here on PEI and to combine that talent with genuine Island Hospitality, I think we are setting ourselves up for a successful tournament”, claims Colin MacIsaac, tournament chairperson.
