FORMER HOCKEY PEI PRESIDENT GORDIE WHITLOCK
JOINS PEI SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Charlottetown, PEI, August, 2010 – New Haven’s Gordie Whitlock, one of the most respected individuals in Island hockey and Past President of Hockey PEI, recently received the ultimate provincial sporting accolade last week when he was inducted into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame.

Whitlock joined his uncle, Roy (Buck) Whitlock and cousin Bobby Whitlock, in the PEI Sports Hall of Fame.

“I am extremely surprised to receive this honour,” said Whitlock. “I’m certainly privileged to be a member of the Hall of Fame on PEI. When I look at all the great athletes and builders of the past, I’m in pretty good company. I’m pretty humble”.

As a player, Whitlock was an all-star at every level, playing on provincial and Atlantic championship teams from interscholastic to Senior A. These included the 1959 Maritime Midget champion Charlottetown Abbies, the Saint Dunstan’s University Saints in 1965, and Sandy’s Royals, Maritime Senior A champions in 1968.

Whitlock’s greatest influence though has been behind the bench, coaching at every level for five decades, winning numerous championships and coaching honours, as well as the utmost respect from his players and fellow coaches. He has an unparalleled six consecutive Island junior titles to his credit, and in 1988 he received an assignment from Hockey Canada to assist with the national under-18 team.

One of his greatest moments came in 1991, when he led the Armour Fence Islanders to the Canadian Senior AAA championship, the Allan Cup.

Whitlock credited his university coach, Jack Kane, as having a major influence on his career.

“When I played three years under him, I got to know him quite well. The pride, passion and intensity that he showed sort of rubbed off on me. I have a lot of respect for him for what he was able to do in coaching”.

A hockey man through and through, Whitlock’s resume as an administrator is also impressive, logging many hours in committee work both provincially and nationally, and he has just recently completed a very successful term as President of Hockey PEI.

Whitlock has made an outstanding contribution to hockey in this province, whether it is as a coach, administrator, player, instructor or mentor.

Whitlock was joined in the 2010 inductee class by former NHL coach and general manager Doug MacLean, tennis stand-out Dr. Bill Moreside, hockey builder and Olympic coach from yesteryear William “Bud” MacEachern, and field hockey international Donna Phillips Hornibrook.
