MACDOUGALL NAMED HEAD COACH OF MEN'S TEAM

Charlottetown – Hockey PEI announced on Monday that Kenny MacDougall of Stratford has been appointed as the new head coach of the 2011 Canada Winter games men’s team.

MacDougall’s appointment comes as a result of the departure of two coaches from the team. In 2008 Billy McGuigan was hired as the team’s head coach for the games in Halifax. McGuigan has recently extended his contract with the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritime Junior Hockey League as the team’s head coach and general manager.

Also departing the team was assistant coach Ryan Ramsay, as he also left the province as a result of work. Hockey PEI met with both coaches to discuss their specific roles with the team. All parties agreed that under the current situation that they likely could not provide the commitment that was expected of them at this time.

“We understand the position of both Billy and Ryan and congratulate on their new positions and wish them the best of luck. We thank them for their time with our program”, stated Gordie Whitlock, Hockey PEI President.

“Going forward we knew that we need to make this change for the betterment of the program. It is important that our staffs reside in the province as there is a large commitment of time required. We are excited to welcome Kenny to the team and expect great things going forward”.

MacDougall an Advanced Level 1 certified coach brings a wealth of experience to the position. His impressive resume includes coaching at all levels including minor hockey, major midget, junior and senior levels. MacDougall also has substantial experience with the Hockey PEI Program of Excellence over the years. He was also the Head Coach of the 2007 Canada Games team, 2007 Head Coach of Team Atlantic at the World Under 17 Championships and also led the Cornwall Thunder to the Telus Cup in 2004.

Last season MacDougall help guide the Summerside Capitals to a Maritime Junior Hockey League title and Fred Page Cup title to earn a berth at the Royal Bank Cup National Junior “A” Championships.

“I am excited to be involved once again with the Hockey PEI Program of Excellence. I look forward to working with these young players, helping them improve their skills and reach their future goals in hockey", stated MacDougall.

Other members of the team staff joining MacDougall is Assistant Coach Jeff MacDonald, Trainer Jerry McKenna and Manager Wayne MacDougall.
