Summerside Awarded 2013 Royal Bank Cup

 
 
The City of Summerside, The Summerside Western Capitals, Hockey PEI and the Maritime Hockey League are thrilled to announce that at the recent 2011 Hockey Canada AGM in Calgary; the site selection committee for the 2013 Royal Bank Cup National Junior “A” Championship made a recommendation that the event be awarded to the Summerside Western Capitals and the City of Summerside.

The City of Summerside and the Summerside Western Capitals have had their sights on this event for a number of seasons and are ecstatic to be awarded this very prestigious event. “This event is certainly one that we want to build our team around, our goal is not only to host this event but to win it on home ice in 2013,” said Western Capitals General Manager Pat McIver.

The five team event will take place from May 4th to 12th, 2013 at Credit Union Place in Summerside with the Championship game broadcast nationally on TSN. The tournament will be chaired by the cities Event Development Officer JP Desrosiers and the Western Capitals GM Pat McIver will be vice chair. A host committee will be selected to chair different operational areas for this large scale event.

“Anytime our city has the opportunity to host an event of this magnitude it creates a wonderful economic impact in our area, as well, allows our community to showcase our world renowned PEI hospitality and our state of the art facilities,” said the City’s Event Development Officer JP Desrosiers.

Mayor Basil Stewart is pleased to welcome yet another Junior “A” National Championship to Summerside. Mayor Stewart was involved in the Centennial Cup in 1989 and as well the Royal Bank Cup in 1997 and will be once again involved in the 2013 event. “Summerside has a strong history of hosting events. We are committed to continuing this legacy in Summerside; we hope to see the Western Capitals capture another championship on home ice here at Credit Union Place in 2013”.

Hockey PEI has had a strong involvement during the bidding phase and supported the bid committee from the initial stages and during the in-person presentation in Toronto in March. "Hockey PEI is pleased to have been selected as the host branch for the 2013 Royal Bank Cup Championship. We look forward to working with the City of Summerside and the host Western Capitals as they pursue the National Junior championship in their own backyard. This is an exciting tournament and should be a great success," stated Gene Power President Hockey PEI.
