HOCKEY PEI INTRODUCES RESPECT IN SPORT COURSE
|

Charlottetown - This season members of Hockey PEI will be provided with an additional educational tool to meet their required certification. Currently all registered team officials with the branch must meet certain certification standards, one includes the traditional Hockey Canada Speak Out certification.
Developed in 1997 Speak Out is a well known program delivered to educate volunteers about the ways to identify and help prevent situations that deal with abuse, harassment, and bullying in sport. The program was developed in partnership with the Red Cross.
Now members will be permitted to obtain an equivalent certification, called Respect in Sport. The program is an on-line training course that delivers the same content and message as the traditional Speak Out program. This new option will allow members to conduct the training on their own time and at their own pace.
"With advances in technology, many of the Hockey Canada educational tools for volunteers are now offered on-line", stated Hockey PEI President Gordie Whitlock. "We see the trend that is developing and that the future for these courses will become more web based for our members".
Hockey PEI has decided to pilot the Respect in Sport program for the coming season. They will also offer the face to face Speak Out classroom sessions for their members. Speak Out clinics are offered throughout the province.
"We want to still offer our members the Speak Out course as an option. We will assess the pilot project with Respect in Sport after the season is complete to determine next steps".
Respect in Sport believes that the sport community should be proactive in making all sport safe and welcoming for all participants. The program helps promote these values through this simple and convenient on-line tool.
