CHARLOTTETOWN – Hockey Canada announced the selections for Team Canada that will be heading to the 2012 Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. Hockey PEI is pleased to announce that Sam Walsh (Elliotvale) will represent PEI on Team Canada.

The Youth Olympic Games are an International Olympic Committee (IOC) initiative that is supported by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). At the Youth Olympic Games (January 13-22) Team Canada will be represented by athletes born in 1996.

The selection of the 17 players to represent Hockey Canada will be comprised of two goaltenders, five defensemen and ten forwards. Each branch within Hockey Canada is represented on the team. Walsh will participate in an elite level competition and alongside the sports element of the event, will participate in Culture and Education Programs.

The IOC and IIHF Youth Olympics is a once in a lifetime opportunity says Gene Power, President of Hockey PEI. “This tournament is a cultural experience as much as it is a hockey experience. Walsh will be given a chance to travel abroad to play the game he loves in an international atmosphere. This will not only expose Walsh to international competition but will also give him a chance to interact and learn from people all over the world.”
