Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, November 15, 2011 – The Local Organizing Committee, in conjunction with CBC and Scotiabank, released details relating to the four-day Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012 celebrations taking place in Prince Edward Island this coming February 8th – 11th.
Earlier this year, CBC announced that Prince Edward Island would host the four-day event which pays tribute and celebrates Canada’s shared passion for hockey. 2012 will mark the 12th anniversary for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada and the first time a province has hosted the event.
“Today we are excited to be unveiling details for some of the events and activities that will be taking place as part of the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebrations,” said Rob Newson, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee. “For four days this coming February, Prince Edward Island will be the epicentre for all things hockey that we, as Canadians, love to celebrate. While Charlottetown and Summerside will be the primary hubs of activity, communities from Tignish to Souris will be involved in some way, allowing Islanders and hockey fans of all ages to be a part of the festivities.”
The full schedule will include a number of in-door and out-door activities, free and ticket events, entertainment, clinics and autograph sessions with hockey personalities and NHL alumni, along with appearances by the event’s hosts from CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada – Ron MacLean and Don Cherry.
A highlight of major events includes:
- Minor Hockey Clinics
(February 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th – locations to be determined)
As part of the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebrations there will be several minor hockey clinics held throughout various communities across PEI. Each clinic will be one hour in duration and will feature NHL alumni along with CBC Hockey Night in Canada personalities. Clinics will be led be Hockey PEI volunteers and community coaches.
- Stolen From a Hockey Card Concert
(February 9th – Confederation Centre of the Arts)
Hosted by CBC’s Ron MacLean, Stolen From a Hockey Card is a hockey-themed concert that will feature an impressive roster of Canadian artists. Each artist will create a hockey themed song to be performed for the first time during the concert followed by one of their original songs. Artists confirmed to date include Canadian songstress Sarah Harmer, Chris Murphy (Sloan), Liam Corcoran (Two Hours Traffic) and former New York Islanders great Brian Trottier.
- Stanley Cup Relay… Across PEI
(February 8th, 9th and 10th – communities across PEI)
For the first time in the history of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, the Stanley Cup will be travelling across an entire province over a three-day period, making stops in various communities each day! The Stanley Cup will be making six to eight community stops - at hockey rinks, schools, hospitals, community centres and Scotiabank and CBC locations. At each stop Islanders and hockey fans alike will be able to get their picture with the NHL’s most coveted prize.
"CBC Prince Edward Island is excited to help host Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada in February," says Jim Ferguson, CBC Senior Manager for PEI. "We look forward to sharing this amazing celebration of the game and our culture with Islanders and those tuning in across the country."
Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebrations will be broadcast live on CBC television from Prince Edward Island to homes across the country on February 11th. A full slate of activities is planned for that day at locations in both Charlottetown and Summerside, in addition to the day-long live broadcast hosted by Ron MacLean and Don Cherry.
"As Canada's Hockey Bank, we are thrilled to be part of the fun as Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada makes its first trip to P.E.I.," said David Noel, Scotiabank's District Vice-President for P.E.I. "From pastexperience we've seen the excitement and activity that comes with this unique celebration of the game and I can't wait for the rest of Canada to see the pride of P.E.I. hockey fans! We are looking forward to a coast to coast day of celebration honouring Canada's favourite sport with fans and players of all ages."
“As we confirm details over the coming weeks, we will continue to release information relating to the full schedule of events, where to purchase tickets, how to register for clinics and contests and so much more,” added Newson. The Local Organizing Committee also announced that this year’s Jack Frost Children’s Winterfest will take on a hockey theme – a nod to the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012 celebrations.
