TEAM PEI CAPTURES GOLD MEDAL AT ATLANTIC CHALLENGE CUP

 
 
CHARLOTTETOWN – Team PEI would strike gold at the 15th Annual Atlantic challenge Cup. Team PEI Under-15 Female would go out to a 2-0 lead against Nova Scotia. Team Nova Scotia would score a late second period goal, but Team PEI held on for a 2-1 victory and the second Under 15 Female Championship for Hockey PEI. The first Championship was in 2008.

On the strength of two goals from Maria Clinton (Souris) and solid goaltending from Peggy Yoston (Cardigan), the team rallied as group and held off a strong attack from Nova Scotia. The team battled through the round robin with a 1-1-1 record and would advance to the final based on the tournament tie breaking formula.


Team PEI - Under 15 Female
2011 Atlantic Challenge Cup - Gold Medalist

Team PEI would capture two additional medals at the Challenge Cup. The Male Under-16 program would settle for a silver medal. They went through the round robin with a 1-0-2 record and advanced to the final based on the tournament tie breaking formula before bowing out in the final to Newfoundland 4-2. The Female Under-17 team would take home a bronze medal after defeating Newfoundland in the medal game 7-1. The team had a round robin record of 0-1-2.

The other two PEI teams, Under-15 Male and Under-14 Male were kept out of the medals, both losing to Newfoundland in their bronze medal game.

Provincial teams from New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island converged in Moncton for the 15th annual event. Over 400 players, team officials and referees representing five divisions participated in the event to compete for the title of Atlantic Champion.

The Atlantic Challenge Cup is the culmination of the High Performance Programs in each of the aforementioned provinces. The High Performance Program, at the provincial level, has provided the players, staff and officials with an opportunity to develop, learn and challenge themselves as they strive for excellence.

Each year, the Atlantic Challenge Cup presents Hard Hat Awards. This award is presented to a player from each team whom is determined by his/her teammates to be the player that has the most positive attitude, greatest work ethic and is a teammate of whom all are proud to be associated. Team PEI winners this year were:

Male Under 14 – Colton Chiasson
Male Under 15 – Curklan Fraser
Male Under 16 – Nick Bouchey
Female Under 15 – Sami-Jo Sentner
Female Under 17 – Nicole Corcoran
