PROGRAM OF EXCELLENCE

Male Spring Schedule         Male Spring Roster
Female Spring Schedule      Female Spring Roster

The Mark’s Work Wearhouse Program of Excellence (POE) Spring Camp is set to be held April 24-27th at the MacLauchlan Arena on the UPEI Campus in Charlottetown. The camp will see both the Male Under 16, 15 and 14 and Female Under 18 and 15 take place on the same weekend.

The POE, organized by Hockey PEI, the Development Council and its designated Coordinators, is used to identify the provinces best hockey players.

The Spring camps will accept a maximum of eighty (80) players at each group; Male Under 14 (born 1995), Male Under 15 (born 1994), Male Under 16 (born 1993), Female Under 18 (born 1991, 1992, 1993), Female Under 15 (born 1994, 1995, 1996). Ages are determined as of December 31st, 2008. Registrations are on a “first come, first serve” basis and are open to all male and female players who meet the age criteria in Prince Edward Island. The fee for the Spring Camp is $100.00 and the deadline to register is Friday, March 21st, 2008.

Up to forty-five players from each group will be identified and selected to attend the POE Summer Camp in August. Players will be selected from the Summer camps to form the five teams which will represent Hockey PEI at the annual Atlantic Challenge Cup to be held in Moncton, thanksgiving weekend.

This year’s camps will see the introduction of a new age category in the male program. The Under 14 Male program has been added and this year will showcase players who are eligible for the 2011 Canada Winter Games team.

The Hockey PEI Spring Camp will no longer offer an Under 17 Male program. In lieu of, Hockey PEI will identify fifteen players through a selection process that will have the honour of representing the province at the Team Atlantic Under 17 male camp which will be held in July.

Charla Currie, Female POE Coordinator and Phil Batt, Male POE Coordinator both agree that the POE provides players and staff with an opportunity to develop, learn and challenge themselves as they strive for excellence.

Both the male and female groups are looking for interested coaches to assist with evaluating at the upcoming camps. Individuals that participate in the evaluation process at the Spring Camp and have a minimum NCCP Coach Level 1 certification may be considered for staff positions. Individuals interested may submit their names to the Hockey PEI office at mike@hockeypei.com.

Canada Games Changes Age Category

As a result of a recommendation from Hockey Canada, the Canada Games Council recently approved an age change to the male hockey program at the Canada Winter Games. Traditionally an Under 17 event, the next Canada Winter Games in Halifax, the male program will be an Under 16 event. As a result of this age change, the Atlantic branches have incorporated an Under 14 program to their POE camps and the Atlantic Challenge Cup to begin the identification process for the 2011 games.

Female Hockey at the 2011 Winter Games will remain as an Under 18 event.

Further information and applicable registration forms are available on the Hockey PEI website at or by contacting the Hockey PEI Office at 902-368-4334.

Player Testimonial

"Four years ago I watched the Canada Games team on TV. Being a young hockey player I knew I wanted to play at that level some day. I started to work towards my goal that year. The program of Excellence was a great yearly measurement of my success.
It was such a thrill to reach my goal and go to the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse. Thanks to Hockey PEI and all the volunteers.
I had the experience of a lifetime."
