Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island – The Local Organizing Committee announced the full line-up of performers and officially launched ticket sales for Stolen From a Hockey Card – the signature concert taking place at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown on February 9th as part of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012 celebrations.
Hosted by CBC’s Ron MacLean, Stolen From a Hockey Card is a hockey-themed concert which pays tribute to Canada’s love and passion for the game of hockey. The impressive all-Canadian line-up of artists for the concert includes songstress Sarah Harmer, Chris Murphy (Sloan), Lennie Gallant, Stephen Stanley (Lowest of the Low), Carmen Townsend, Liam Corcoran (Two Hours Traffic), Bidiniband and former New York Islanders great and Hockey Hall of Fame member Bryan Trottier.
“Hosting Stolen From A Hockey Card will certainly be a highlight of the entire week,” said Rob Newson, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012. “Musician and author Dave Bidini has compiled an impressive line-up of great Canadian artists who will transform the game of hockey into song and great celebration. This is a very special cultural component of the week and we are very excited that Islanders and hockey fans alike will have an opportunity to sit back and enjoy a great show. This will certainly be a popular ticket.”
Each artist will write their own hockey-themed song which they will perform for the first time as part of the concert. In addition to their newly-written hockey song, each artist will also perform one of their own original songs. Bidiniband, featuring Dave Bidini, formerly of acclaimed rock band The Rheostatics and creator of the Stolen From a Hockey Card concert, will serve as house band for the evening.
"This concert is the single point where hockey and the arts meet,” said Dave Bidini. “If last year's show in Whitehorse is any indication, it should be a great scene with Hall of Fame hockey players interacting with some of Canada's finest songwriters; a real coming together of two things Canadians are just really good at."
The event is a unique opportunity to see an array of great Canadian performers and celebrate the game of hockey through music and song. "I feel very lucky, being able to play my own original hockey song in front of a hometown crowd,” said Liam Corcoran, member of the Prince Edward Island indie rock band Two Hours Traffic. “This is a rare opportunity to celebrate my love of hockey and my love of music all in the same event."
Stolen From a Hockey Card is scheduled for 8:00pm on Thursday, February 9th at the Confederation Centre of the Arts – Homburg Theatre. Tickets are $35 (plus service fees) and can be purchased at the Confederation Centre box office in person, online at www.confederationcentre.com or by calling 1.800.565.0278.
Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012, taking place February 8th – 11th, celebrates and pays tribute to Canada’s shared passion for hockey. Earlier this year, CBC announced that Prince Edward Island would host the four-day event. The 2012 edition of the event will mark the 12th anniversary for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada and the first time a province has hosted the event. Prince Edward Island’s hosting of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2012 is a local partnership that includes the Province of Prince Edward Island, City of Charlottetown, City of Summerside and Hockey PEI.

Stolen From a Hockey Card Concert
Stolen From a Hockey Card is the brainchild of Canadian musician, author and avid hockey fan Dave Bidini. The name "Stolen From a Hockey Card" is in reference to a lyric from the Tragically Hip song “50 Mission Cap”. The song is a tribute to Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Bill Barilko. Barilko scored the Stanley Cup clinching goal for the Leafs in 1951 against the Montreal Canadiens. Four months later Barilko boarded a small aircraft for a fishing trip in Timmons, Ontario. The plane never arrived. The Maple Leafs didn’t win another Stanley Cup until 1962, eleven years later, which was the same year Barilko’s remains were discovered.
A “50 mission cap” is a reference to WWII style U.S. Army Officer’s cap. The cap traditionally developed a deformity from pilot headphones after flying roughly fifty missions. The lyric that inspired the name for the concert goes… “I stole this from a hockey card, I keep tucked up under my fifty mission cap”.
Artist Bios:
Sarah Harmer
Sarah Harmer was born and raised in Burlington, Ontario. At 17, joined her first band, The Saddletramps, and for three years juggled touring with her Philosophy and Women’s Studies B.A at Queen’s University. Her first solo album was released in 1999 and she has subsequently released four additional albums, including 2010’s Oh Little Fire. Sarah is a platinum- selling artist who was been nominated for numerous Juno Awards, as well as the 2006 Polaris Music Prize.
Sarah is also the co-founder of Protecting Escarpment Rural Land (PERL), an organization that strives to protect the Niagara Escarpment from a proposed gravel development. In 2011, Harmer participated in the National Parks Project, visiting British Columbia's Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site with Bry Webb, Jim Guthrie and filmmaker Scott Smith. She was also commissioned by CBC Radio 2 to write an original campfire song, Park Song for the network.
Chris Murphy
Chris was born in Charlottetown the year after the Leafs last won the Stanley cup so he’s getting up there. He technically didn’t grow up in Prince Edward Island but he spent most summers in Georgetown/Burnt Point. He watched a lot of hockey when Errol Thompson was on the Leafs and in 1979 Chris won “best all around player” on his house league team at an “awards ceremony” where every kid received some kind of award. At some point in the early 1980’s Chris found hockey incompatible with being “punk” and didn’t play for 20 years. Eventually, Chris got back into hockey through the Hockey Association of the Arts (hockeyaa.net) where he currently plays during the year with his beloved Blackhearts and with The Halifax-Dartmouth Ferries at the Hockey Summit of the Arts held every Easter weekend in Toronto. Oh yeah, Chris is 1/4 of the band Sloan.
Lennie Gallant
Recognized by his peers as one of Canada's best performing songwriters, Lennie Gallant has released nine albums (seven in English and two in French) which have won him a host of awards and nominations from both the Juno Awards and East Coast Music Association. His album, When We Get There was nominated for a Juno Award and went into space aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour in July 2009. Canadian astronaut Julie Payette chose the album for the astronaut crew to enjoy.
Gallant has toured internationally, playing festivals and concerts accompanied by roots rock bands, and in acoustic settings. He has shared the stage with such accomplished songwriters as Lucinda Williams, Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Patti Griffin, and Ron Sexsmith and has represented Canada at songwriter events in Nashville, London, and Texas. He performed 6 shows at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, including a performance at BC Place during the medal ceremonies. He represented the East Coast of Canada at "Canada Day in London" in Trafalgar Square on July 1, 2011 in the largest Canada Day celebration outside Canada's borders.
Gallant received his 15th ECMA award at the 2011 East Coast Music Awards Gala, held in Charlottetown, PEI.
Stephen Stanley
Stephen Stanley first came to prominence as lead guitarist and founding member of Toronto's indie faves Lowest of the Low. During their celebrated career the band released four CDs, sold more than 120,000 records, and toured endlessly. Perhaps their high-water mark was the release of their 1991 certified gold album Shakespeare My Butt, which ranks sixth on Chart magazine's best Canadian albums of all time and received the coveted lifetime achievement award from Toronto's 102.1, the Edge.
The band was inducted into the Canadian Indie Hall of Fame in 2008. 2011 saw the band tour extensively in support of the Shakespeare My Butt... 20th Anniversary Celebration.
Stanley released his first solo disc That Thin, Wild Mercury in 2003 and supported it by exercising his renowned performance muscle in various venues throughout Canada and the US. His second solo venture was a disc called Non Barking Dog under the band name Too Many Sisters. This work was released in 2008 and the band is slated to record again in early 2012. Stanley and Dave Bidini are also founding members of Toronto's most "legendary" rec hockey team, the Morningstars...
Carmen Townsend
2011 has been a whirlwind of awesome for Carmen Townsend. Cape Breton's Rock and Roll fiend toured the country twice this year once opening the show for Rock Legends Heart and then headlined her own tour in support of her highly acclaimed debut album Waitin and Seein. Her 3 Piece band blazed through Australia, Texas, the UK, and played oodles of festivals and shows this summer in the Maritimes. Carmen recently received 4 Music Nova Scotia Awards including Female Artist, New Artist Recording, Rock Recording and Recording of the year. Be sure not to miss Ms. Townsend and her killer band when they invade a stage near you with gunning 70's riffs, vocal acrobatics and an empowering live show.
Liam Corcoan
Liam Corcoran is the lead singer of Charlottetown-based rock band Two Hours Traffic. Since forming in 2002, the band has recorded 2 EPs and 3 full-length albums. They have won both PEIMA and ECMA awards and their 2007 release Little Jabs was shortlisted for Canada’s Polaris Prize. The band has toured extensively throughout North America and Australia.
In 2010, Liam teamed up with his cousin Kinley Dowling from Hey Rosetta! to form a folk-pop duo called the Express. They released their self-titled debut album in July of 2011 to much critical acclaim across the country.
Bryan Trottier
A retired professional hockey player, Bryan Trottier played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins. He won four Stanley Cups with the Islanders, two with the Penguins and one as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche. He holds the NHL record for points in a single period with 6 (4 goals, 2 assists) in the second period against the Rangers on Dec. 23, 1978. He is also one of only eight NHL players with multiple 5-goal games. Trottier was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 1997.
